Mercedes is something different as it refuses to follow a single path to build fuel-efficient cars. Both M- and S-Class models have offered a choice of diesel and hybrid powertrains. Currently the company is approaching with E-class as well. Mercedes will debut its 2013 E400 hybrid at the upcoming Detroit auto show that joins diesel E350 BlueTec.

The hybrid system of E400 is an evolution of larger S400’s setup. The S-class is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine rated at 275 hp with a 20 hp electric motor. E400 gets a 302 horsepower, direct-injection 3.5L V6 engine and 27hp electric motor.

In both cars, you could see the motor being sandwiched between gas engine and a 7-speed automatic transmission system. However the major difference between the two powertrains is the electric motor and their working ability. The electric motor of S400 generates 118 pound-feet of torque, while E’s motor makes 184.
