Audi Developing Diesel Hybrid Supercar

Posted on 28. Nov, 2012 by in News

The German automaker Audi is planning to build a diesel-electric supercar, using technology advances from Le Mans racer. Their similar efforts in the past created the superb R8 V12 TDI, but it remained as a concept car, and never went to production. However, this time the automaker is serious, rigorously thinking about diesel electric powered hypercar.

It has already a diesel electric power-train system, which won the R18 e-Tron a Le Mans victory. The diesel electric hybrid system is going to replace the V12 TDI. Though much on the specs hasn’t been out, it is expected to give a power output of about 700BHP and torsion of 1000Nm in order to compete with rivals. It would have a top speed of 200mph and accelerate 0-62mph within 3 seconds.

Wide selections of chassis options are available, including carbon monocoque. It is also possible that it will feature a new MSB platform, which is currently being produced for Volkswagen Group, including next generation Porsche 911, Lamborghini Gallardo, and Audi R8. Like MQB, the new MSB platform will be highly flexible in terms of the materials it is developed from.

The unnamed Audi diesel hybrid supercar will sit above R8 and will compete against the likes of Ferrari Enzo facelift, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder.
