Now the consumers will have a brand new tool to help them decide their next auto buy. A new fuel economy website from government calculates payback for cheap gasoline models versus hybrid vehicles. The site currently features the 2012 and 2013 models of Toyota Prius C One, 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, and 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid. A similar website can be seen even in Edmunds.com, which not only covers hybrids but also gives an idea of car cost and fuel savings.

The calculation is actually quite simple as it only considers MSRP and fuel cost whereas factors like maintenance, resale value, incentives, and insurance are not made part of the equation. The website says, “Based on MSRP and fuel costs alone, hybrid vehicles can save you money versus a comparably equipped conventional vehicle.”

The site interface is quite simple and almost anyone can use it. Consumers can log into the website and select a hybrid vehicle of their choice and then make the necessary adjustments from a wide range of sliders that cover payback period and fuel cost savings. These are based on factors like annual miles, highway/city driving and fuel prices. The website has been instantly appreciated by all classes of people of auto fraternity.
