A supercar is an exotic sports car, typically a rare one, whose performance is vastly superlative to the modern sports cars.

Plug-in Diesel Hybrid Car from BMW

BMW, world’s largest automaker, is going to build a hybrid supercar as a part of its effort in creating fuel efficient vehicles.

The new Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept is a 2+2 four-door car; this plug-in diesel hybrid sportscar emits 99 gm/km of CO2 and will be able to achieve a top speed of 155mph and 0-60 time acceleration within 5 seconds.

It will be powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine and two electric motors that would pep out 356hp, and impressive 590 lb-ft of torque.

The lithium-polymer battery pack consists of 98 cells and charges in 2 to 3 hours using standard 220V outlet and it doesn’t require active cooling.

It is likely to come in 2013 and is considered as rolling technology bed for upcoming high-performance BMW.

Using the technology derived from its Formula 1, the automaker has developed the hybrid version of 599, reducing the CO2 emission by 35% when compared to the 599 GTB Fiorano versions on which it is based.

The compact electric motor is rated at 100hp powered by lithium ion batteries placed under the floor pan of the car.

These batteries can be recharged using kinetic energy collected under braking conditions. The tri-phase high-volt electric motors are intended to cut in during acceleration, delivering torque on the spot when moving away from a nil position.

Energy from 6.0-L V12 engine can be further preserved by running ancillaries such as air conditioning, power assisted steering, and brakes, as well as other on-board components off the lithium ion batteries instead of directly by the engine.

Porsche’s plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder has been tuned into leading engineering and technical advances.

A 500hp V8 engine and two electric motors at each end power the beast; it can run on electric motors, gas, or a combination of two at normal driving speed.

A liquid-cooled lithium ion battery pack covers 16 miles of electric driving range and under purely electric power the supercar can reach 94mph.

It is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 200 mph.

It uses 221kW 3.0-L twin-turbo diesel engine and twin electric motor; it can sprint from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.4 second, which is simply awesome for a hybrid car.

Apart from the highly efficient TDI engine, it features ASF technology to keep the supercar rigid and very strong.
